Love is.. not envious, doesn’t boast and is not proud
1 Corinthians 13:4
“Love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant…”
The Greek word used for love in this verse is agape. Agape is described in Britannica Encyclopedia as the highest form of love. It is the love that God gives us. Jesus is the example of love. Love is sacrificial, humble, selfless, pure and so much more.
In this text we are told not to envy, boast and be arrogant. Strongs concordance describes these three words:
Envy is to be jealous and covet: yearn to possess or have something.
Boasting is vaulting oneself: praising, glorifying, and extolling oneself excessively.
Arrogance is to puff up, be proud, be haughty.
All of these words are verbs: thoughts, physical actions, speech…
These words are self centered and focused inward.
Thoughts: Thinking of yourself, highly or negatively
Actions: Doing things for yourself
Speech: Speaking of yourself, highly or negatively
Everything is about you. How can you love another person if you are consumed by yourself?
Jesus tells us to not envy, boast or be arrogant. Love is the opposite of self. If it is sacrificial, it is denying yourself and putting others first. The love Jesus has for us is pure and it never fails. We see it in the way Jesus conquered death and granted us salvation.
