Love is… Not rejoicing in evil but in truth

Paul wrote the books of the Corinthians to repair spiritual gifts and break immoral habits they have created. To break these habits, Paul taught the Corinthians that love doesn’t rejoice in bad actions, like drunkenness & gluttony that Paul talked about in chapter 5. But he taught that true love rejoices in truth and what is right.

Psalm 5:4 says ”For you are not a God who is pleased with wickedness; with you, evil people are not welcome.“

The God who is love delights in truth, and what is just. To be more like God we need to love, and part of that is rejoicing in what is good, and not rejoicing in sin. Anything that sweeps sin under the rug isn’t true Godly love. It’s the polar opposite actually. Isaiah 5:20 says ”Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.“ Love doesn’t try to get away with what is bad, but it treasures truth, and goodness. Sin isn’t something to be happy about, although we all sin and fall short, we can’t be okay with our sin.

When we don’t rejoice in truth, we hope for the best for others, and refuse to wish for bad on others. Love always stands for what is pure and good.

Pastor Rob Green said it best to summarize this verse:

  • “Recognize your willingness to rejoice with evil is inconsistent with biblical love.
  • Repent for a heart that found joy in evil rather than truth.
  • Remember that Jesus will never leave you or forsake you and he stands ready to forgive you.
  • Apply the heart of excitement whenever Truth wins.”

Use those tips as you continue living out in love in your daily life. She Brews Fam, you’re the best!
